Ten tips to eat your way to great skin

youarewhatyoueatSpring has finally arrived and we are all beginning to think about baring all on our summer holidays. Did you know it’s not just the creams we use on our bodies that determines what our skin looks like, it’s actually what we put in our mouths that plays the biggest part in how our skin looks.

We’ve put together a list of the top 10 tips for achieving smooth, clear and beautiful skin from the inside.

1 – Drink lots of water. Yep you’ve heard it before but we will tell you again. Keeping your skin hydrated is paramount. Aim for 6-8 glasses as a minimum, more if you are exercising or if the weather is warm.

2 – Eat enough fibre. Fibre keeps your intestinal tract regular and enhances the elimination of waste from your body. Many people with skin problems often complain of gut problems too, often caused by a lack of fibre in there diet. This is not a coincidence. Whole grains and vegetables are great sources of natural fibre.

3 – Limit salt intake. A high salt intake can cause the body to hold water and appear puffy – certainly not what we want appearing around our eyes, regardless of anywhere else!

4 – Eat foods rich in vitamin E. Foods high in vitamin e include avocados, almonds and hazelnuts. Vitamin E protects against oxidative cell damage and supports healthy skin growth – double win.

5 – Include foods rich is healthy fats. Especially Omega-3 fats as they contain potent anti-inflammatory properties which can help with skin conditions, particularly inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema. Ensure you are always hitting your Omega 3 requirements by including our Omega 3 softgels.

6 – Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol. Despite being generally bad for your health, drinking alcohol acts as a diuretic, undoing all that good work you did drinking your 8 glasses of water!

7 – Eat foods rich in zinc. These include red meat, whole grains, fish, nuts and seeds. Zinc is involved in the normal functioning of the sebaceous glands in the skin which produce oil keeping skin soft and supple. For an easy way to get more zinc into your diet you could include supplementing with ZMA.

8 – Include good quality protein sources. Protein contains amino acids which are the building blocks to all of our cells, including our skin! Therefore including enough protein in your diet is key to keeping your skin healthy. We can help here with our selection of great tasting premium proteins.

9 – Eat lots of foods rich in the antioxidant vitamins. Foods such as berries, dark leafy green vegetables and kidney beans are all high in the vitamins A, C & E, which are known as the antioxidant vitamins. Research has shown antioxidants can aid in the damaging effects of free radicals which can lead to cell damage – including our skin.

10 – Include foods which are rich in selenium. Selenium can be found in whole grains and can help protect your skin against environmental damage and can aid in natural skin elasticity.
